Tapas, Sangria & another beautiful sunset in Barcelona

Romantic and fun getaway in Catalonian City…..

The moment I stepped off the plane, I was enveloped in a warm, Mediterranean breeze. Barcelona, with its vibrant energy and architectural marvels, was ready to unveil its secrets.

Well well a place for an adventure for two … however, it’s a perfect place for family, friends or a lone wanderer… There's something for foodies, night owls, art lovers and more!

Barcelona, a city where history and modernity intertwine, offers a captivating blend of architectural marvels, cultural treasures, and vibrant street life. My journey began with my companion on the iconic La Rambla, a bustling boulevard lined with shops, cafes, and street performers. As we strolled along, we couldn't help but be drawn to the lively atmosphere and the colorful mosaic tiles that adorn the sidewalks.

At the end of La Rambla, we reached the imposing Christopher Columbus Monument, a towering column topped by a statue of the explorer. From here, we had a breathtaking view of the port and the Mediterranean Sea.

The construction of the monument in 1888, during the Universal Exposition of Barcelona, was part of a broader 'Columbian' movement across Europe. It is celebrated as symbol of progress and discovery

The presence of Christopher Columbus's monument on La Rambla, while seemingly obvious, is a subject of much debate and controversy. The placement of the monument at the end of La Rambla symbolizes Columbus's return to Spain after his first voyage to the Americas, with Barcelona as his port of arrival. It is interesting to know before arriving to this place that in recent years, Columbus's legacy has come under increasing scrutiny, particularly his role in the colonization of the Americas and the genocide of indigenous populations. This has led to renewed debate about the monument's symbolism and its continued presence on La Rambla. Though, many argue that celebrating Columbus glorifies colonialism and its devastating impact on indigenous peoples. The monument, with Columbus pointing towards the sea, has been interpreted by some as a gesture of conquest and domination.

Our next stop was the iconic Sagrada Família. As I gazed up at Gaudí's masterpiece, I was awestruck by its intricate details and soaring spires. It felt like a living, breathing organism, defying the laws of gravity and time. The Sagrada Família is an iconic landmark of Barcelona and one of the most famous architectural works in the world. Designed by Antoni Gaudí, this expiatory church is still under construction, a project that has been ongoing for over a century. Gaudí's innovative architectural style, inspired by nature and organic forms, is evident throughout the basilica.

The facades are adorned with intricate sculptures depicting the birth, passion, and glory of Christ. Every element of the Sagrada Família carries deep symbolic meaning. The towers represent the apostles, the evangelists, and Jesus Christ. This Construction began in 1882 and is expected to be completed around 2026. In 2005, the Sagrada Família was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognizing its exceptional universal value.

My attention was then taken by the Ciutadella Park, a sprawling green oasis, offering a peaceful escape from the bustling city. Once a military fortress, the park is now a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. As you wander through the park, you'll encounter a variety of attractions, including The Castell dels Tres Dragons.

This stunning Gothic Revival castle, once a museum of zoology, now houses a contemporary art museum. Then the Parc Zoològic, this zoo is home to a diverse range of animals, from lions and tigers to exotic birds and reptiles. Walking one can admire The Monument a Francesc Ferrer i Guardia, it commemorates a Catalan educator and anarchist.

At the entrance to the park, you'll find the Arc de Triomf, a neo-Mudéjar triumphal arch built for the 1888 Universal Exposition.

Its intricate brickwork and colorful tiles make it a striking landmark. It was a wonderful afternoon!! Filled with music and people dancing tango and flamenco on the streets …. It’s a full dip into culture!  Ciutadella Park is a perfect place to relax, have a picnic, or simply enjoy the fresh air. The park's serene atmosphere, combined with its historical significance, makes it a must-visit destination for anyone exploring Barcelona.

Wandering through the narrow, winding streets of the Gothic Quarter was our next special walk in this city, We stumbled upon hidden plazas and ancient churches. The air was filled with the scent of freshly baked bread and the sound of lively conversations. I couldn't resist indulging in a plate of pa amb tomàquet, a simple yet delicious Catalan dish of bread rubbed with tomato and topped with olive oil and salt. The Gothic Quarter, or Barri Gòtic, is a captivating maze of narrow, winding streets, historic buildings, and hidden squares.

This medieval district is a fascinating blend of history, culture, and vibrant nightlife. If you gaze up you will see this stunning Gothic cathedral, with its soaring spires and intricate details, is a must-see. Beneath the Gothic Quarter lie ancient Roman ruins, including remnants of the city walls and a Roman temple as we well know it is Europe after all… how can you not find Roman ruins!

The Gothic Quarter transforms immediately into a lively nightlife hub as the sun sets. Where one can taste delicious tapas, patatas bravas to jamón ibérico, in one of the many traditional tapas bars. One can discover hidden gem cocktail bars that offer creative and innovative drinks.

Whether you're a history buff, a foodie, or a night owl, the Gothic Quarter has something for everyone.

Get lost in its labyrinthine streets, discover its hidden gems, and experience the magic of Barcelona's medieval heart.

A visit to Barcelona wouldn't be complete without exploring the works of Antoni Gaudí. We spent hours marveling at the whimsical architecture of Park Güell, with its colorful mosaic tiles and fantastical shapes up to Carmel being taken from the beauty of the view. The Casa Batlló and La Pedrera, were always along our way coming back and forth from our place with their undulating facades and innovative designs, left us breathless.

As the sun began to set, we made our way to Barceloneta beach, where we watched the sky turn shades of pink and orange. The lively atmosphere, the sound of waves crashing against the shore, and the aroma of seafood paella filled the air. Barceloneta is a vibrant neighborhood located on the coast, known for its beautiful beaches, fresh seafood, and lively atmosphere.

One can spend a day sunbathing, swimming, or people-watching on the golden sands of Barceloneta Beach. It is a very romantic stroll along the promenade, where you can have time admiring the views of the sea, and enjoying the lively atmosphere.

No trip to Barcelona is complete without indulging in the city's culinary delights. I couldn't resist trying a bocadillo de calamares, a crispy squid sandwich, and a crema catalana, a creamy custard dessert!!!!

As the sun begins to set, heading back to the beach to witness the stunning sunset is a must. The sky is ablaze with colors, painting a breathtaking picture. We couldn't help but feel grateful for the opportunity to experience such beauty.

To escape the bustling city center,  a cable car up to Montjuïc Hill is a good answer. From the top, we were rewarded with panoramic views of the city skyline, the harbor, and the Mediterranean Sea. The hill is also home to several iconic landmarks, including the Montjuïc Castle, the Magic Fountain, and the Olympic Stadium. We wandered through the lush gardens of Montjuïc, admiring the colorful flowers and exotic plants. The peaceful atmosphere was a welcome respite from the city's hustle and bustle. I even stumbled upon a hidden gem: the Fundació Joan Miró, a museum dedicated to the works of the famous Catalan artist.

If you want to get away for a while from the city why not head towards Mercantic, a 30 min drive and you find a unique and vibrant market village located in Sant Cugat del Vallès, just outside of Barcelona, Spain. If with friends even better!! It's a haven for vintage lovers, antique enthusiasts, and anyone who appreciates unique and eclectic finds. To truly experience Barcelona's vibrant culture, consider visiting during one of its many festivals. La Mercè, held in September, is the city's biggest festival, featuring colorful parades, traditional dances, and fireworks. Festa Major de Gràcia is a neighborhood festival celebrated in August, with decorated streets, live music, and delicious food. Another exciting event to experience in Barcelona is Diada Nacional de Catalunya, or Catalonia's National Day, celebrated on September 11th.

This day commemorates the fall of Barcelona in 1714, and it's a significant cultural and political event. The city comes alive with Catalan flags, traditional music, and festive parades. It's a great opportunity to immerse yourself in Catalan culture and witness the passion of the people.

As our time in Barcelona drew to a close, we couldn't help but feel a sense of longing. This vibrant city has captured our heart with its stunning architecture, delicious food, and warm hospitality. We knew we would return one day to continue exploring its hidden gems and immersing ourselves in its unique culture.
